The former convent is a newly restored structure, extremely suggestive, with a breathtaking view over the village, the Marmilla and the Giara di Gesturi. An interesting visit to discover something more about the modern Sardinian era.<\/p>\n

The creation of the Convent of Genoni Archdiocese of Arborea – Oristano that, as in the cases of Gadoni and Fonni, pushed the Friars Minor to open new foundations in their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

The decision to found the Convent dates back to December 12, 1609, although Laconi was indicated as the host town. The figure of Father Pietro Locci was important in making Genoni preferred to Laconi: he also convinced the Marquis of Laconi in this decision, while the assent of the competent Ecclesiastical Authority was given on July 20, 1638.<\/p>\n

The official mandate to Fr. Pietro Locci to found the new Convent of S. Sebastiano in Genoni dates back to October 28, 1638. The deed of incorporation is dated October 14, 1638<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The two ancient churches of S. Sebastiano Martire and of the SS. Sepolcro (called in this way because it is next to the cemetery) were the place chosen where to build the Convent; the above mentioned churches were united. A third church was built in honour of St. Sebastian the Martyr, which gave name and title to the Convent. The inhabitants of Genoni took part in its construction free of charge, with one working day per person, as established by the chapters of agreement between the Friars Minor of Sardinia and the People and Community of Genoni. The conditions of the Friars towards the Community were:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • a stable and permanent presence of a Franciscan Community, composed of no less than 12 Friars, whose principal task is of a pastoral nature;<\/li>\n
  • a permanent Preacher throughout the year for the Preaching of Lent, Advent, and any other Christian holidays of the Parish<\/li>\n
  • a teacher of Grammar for the young students of Genoni and in the future open a study of Rhetoric and Philosophy
    collaboration and participation with the Community in every pastoral and spiritual commitment of the country

    At the beginning the relationship between the religious and the town was profitable; the Friary also owned some land, so that the Friars could apply the fruits deriving from the Masses. Its cultural role within the Community was also important; in fact, in 1778 a list of the volumes present in the Library of the Convent was drawn up, giving a total of 413 volumes divided into sections: Sacred Scripture, Moral Theology, Mystical Theology, Philosophy, History, Hagiography, Preaching, Liturgy, Franciscanism, Mariology, Sacramental Theology, Classical Literature, Grammar and Rhetoric.<\/p>\n

    From the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century, however, the Convent of S. Sebastiano went into decline. Around 1840 Casalis notes that “the friars are now reduced to three or four from the many that were in other times”. This was due to misunderstandings that arose between the Religious and the Municipal Administration of Genoni, based on reciprocal accusations of carelessness and non-fulfilment of initial agreements and conditions. The Friars were accused of no longer carrying out the education of the young as in the past, while the administration was reproached for not remunerating the teachers of the Friary.<\/p>\n

    P. Benedetto Pillitu, after visiting the Friary of Genoni, on January 30, 1861 wrote to Fr. Bernardino Trionfetti of Montefranco that he had decided to withdraw the Friars from Genoni. The decision stemmed from an awareness of the strained relations between the Religious and the Community, indicated by Father as “not a grateful population”. The problems indicated were both of an economic nature – the teachers were not paid – and of security – the building where the friars were housed was unsafe.<\/p>\n

    In 1862<\/strong> the Convents of the Province of S. Saturnino (of which Genoni was also a part) were suppressed by the Italian Government.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
