The Giara plateau, sa “JARA” in the Sardinian language, is a vast area of land located in the centre of Sardinia, with an extension of about 45 square kilometres, and a height of about 600 metres above sea level.<\/p>\n

\"Horses<\/p>\n

The name Giara probably derives from the Latin glarea (gravel), with reference to the widespread stoniness that characterizes the plateau.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Giara began its formation in the Miocene<\/strong> 20-25 million years ago<\/strong>, when sedimentary rocks were formed in the area still submerged by the sea, but the real formation dates back to the Pliocene<\/strong>, 5-2 million years ago<\/strong>, therefore in more recent times.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ridges are characterized by steep cliffs of lava rock, in some places shaped by rapid waterfalls. The central part is surprisingly flat and interrupted by two reliefs, Zepparedda<\/strong> and Zeppara Manna<\/strong>, remarkable panoramic points<\/strong> from which to observe the pools of water, is paulis, that dot the green Mediterranean scrub.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Giara Park is best known as the place where the “Giara horses<\/strong>“, one of the few wild horses in Europe, find refuge. Of all the animals that live on the Giara, the Giara horse, “Equus caballus jarae”, is undoubtedly the most famous. Not having fossil traces, or at least not sufficient to prove the contrary, it is assumed that the animal is present in Sardinia from the Nuragic or Punic period.<\/p>\n

All this together with the Giara’s biodiversity and geological peculiarities have led to its recognition as a Site of Community Importance and thanks to its remarkable landscape-naturalistic values, the Giara plateau has been included among the nine natural parks provided for by the Regional Law n\u00b0 31 of 1989.<\/p>\n
