Geosit: Duidduru Quarry
Geosit: Duidduru Quarry
The Geo Paleo Site, also known as the Duidduru quarry, represents a unique reality in Sardinia. A geo-paleontological asset not to be missed by lovers of cultural tourism, fossils and educational institutions.

A present-day tropical scenario can help us imagine what Duidduru might have been like in the Miocene; the stratigraphy of the site and the wealth of fossils present are some of the elements that make the site interesting from a scientific point of view.
The work of palaeontologists and geologists of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Sassari and Nuoro and of the Professors of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Cagliari has allowed to bring to light the Miocene environment. Various stratigraphic levels, the presence of numerous fossil finds, different paleo-environments can be admired by visitors.
The fossils present belong to marine animal species that still live in shallow tropical waters.
Their fossilization took place by mineralization, and thanks to the sandstone, the fossils have been excellently preserved.
Fossils from the Geosite are on display at PARC and at major national paleontological museums.

A wonderful experience... Magical. Like traveling back in time.
Wonderful experience for both my 4 and 6 year olds who ventured into the world of paleontology during the morning, and for us parents. We were followed throughout the day by Roberta and Michele that we have illustrated with a thousand details and curiosity about the world of the horse of the giara and beyond. Very interesting the excursion to the giara and also the visit to the geological site. Highly recommended for all families, but not only, who want to spend a different, interesting and outdoor day.
Recently, I had the chance to visit the museum where ancient fossils are kept. I thank the Geologist Luigi Sanciu for the very interesting explanation. What impressed me the most was seeing the paleo site live, where you can see the fossils, there where they were discovered.... An open-air museum... Wonderful... Millions and millions of years ago, part of Sardinia was submerged by the sea...
